The main problem to navigate at this time of year are schools half terms, so prices will be high most places you may want to go, especially family beach holidays and for specialty holidays like skiing.
The Canary Islands - Tenerife and Lanzarote - are always great short haul destinations, and they are still warm in February. About the same flying distance, and beginning to warm up now, is North Africa – specifically Egypt, since Morocco and Tunisia will still be chilly. It may be busy at half term, but if you can go outside these times, it will be quieter. With or without a family in tow, the Middle East is a great destination for culture at this time of year – you don’t want to try and visit Petra in Jordan in the heat of midsummer, but in February it’s cool and generally dry. For more luxury, consider Dubai (though the culture is all modern there!) or Oman, where you can go on great desert adventures with the kids.
Without kids, February is the month of romance, of course, so if you have none you could make some in Paris or Venice, the two quintessential romantic destinations in Europe. If you fancy giving birth to a Sandy, you’ll need long haul, but for a Rocky try Malta – generally cool, but you may get lucky (with the weather.)
Like January, you are spoiled for choice for long haul destinations in February. Prices, however, will likely be higher, so for the budget conscious consider Sri Lanka – where hotels and villa rentals are affordable and its the perfect time to be here - or Thailand and Cambodia, in fact most of South East Asia north of Indonesia has great weather in February, and it’s a great time for sightseeing before the summer madness sets in. India is also great this time of year, for palaces, deserts, and temples. For budget beaches, try Varkala or Kovalam in Kerala. For a more traditional February beach holiday, the Indian Ocean and the Caribbean will be expensive, but how about a beach resort in northern Brazil? Rio and the south can be wetter, but around Salvador is hot and dry. Or, to avoid jetlag, head for the beaches of Cape Town – where the weather promises to be balmy and beautiful. Last, if you can manage the flight time, check out February holidays to Australia and New Zealand. The weather in still great, but the holiday season airfares have gone, and it’s too far to be on most family’s half term wish list.
