Where's Hot in August?

Where isn't effing hot in August? Personally, I prefer to escape the hordes in August and go somewhere like Northern Finland, where the days are long - in fact endless - and the air is fresh. However, if you have to go somewhere hot, here are a few ideas of how to beat the crowds:

Short Haul Holidays in August

While you may want to avoid the crowds of the mainstream resorts of the Costa del Sol, why not visit the less well known Costa del Luz, the windier coast on the Cadiz side, where the windsurfing and kitesurfing is spectacular. Still pretty hot, but there's a breeze to cool you down. Northern Spain, in Galicia, is also lovely in August. It rains most of the year up here, consequently the hills and mountains are beautifully green, and there are some great beaches. July and August it conveniently stops raining. Just across the border in France, Biarritz and the coast south of Bordeaux, and the Ile de Re, are lovely in August, though you will need to contend with heavy domestic tourism.

In Italy, a holiday on Lake Maggiore, Lake Garda or Lake Como in August mixes guaranteed good weather, great food, and relaxed water sports, and being close to the Alps the Italian Lakes are that much cooler than the plains around Milan or the cities further south.

Last, how about a sailing holiday in the Eastern Med - amongst the Greek Islands or along the Aegean coast of Turkey. The islands off the coast of Croatia are also beautiful at this time of year.

Long Haul Holidays in August

North American destinations are perfect in August. New England, California, and Washington state in the north west are all great places to head on holiday. Further north, a visit to the Canadian Rockies in mid summer provides a great mixture of breathtaking scenery and fine weather.

To the east, much of south east asia and the Indian subcontinent is batterd by summer monsoons, but Sri Lanka and south eastern India - Tamil Nadu - are hot and mostly dry, avoiding the worst of the monsoons. Finally, while the Maldives can be wet, the more southerly destinations of the Seychelles and Mauritius have some of their best weather in August, though Mauritius can have frequent short showers of rain in between the sunshine.

One you may not have thought of...

Slovenia - a beautiful and still largely unexplored corner of Europe - for stunning scenery and gorgeous weather In August.
